Should I take 30 minute, 45 minute or 60 minute lessons?

I would recommend a 45 minute or 60 minute lesson for any one over the age of 13. For kids 12 and under I would recommend a 30 minute lesson.

How much do I need to practice?

The more practising you do the better you get. 30 minutes a day is a good starting point. If you can't dedicate at least 3 or 4 hours a week to practising then it becomes difficult to make any progress.

What equipment will I need to take guitar lessons?

You will need to have a guitar that you can bring to your lesson and have to practice with the rest of the week. You will also need a plectrum, extra strings, guitar tuner, metronome and a binder or folder to keep music and other papers.

What if I can not attend my lesson?

If you cannot attend a lesson you are allowed to reschedule the lesson as long as notice is received at least one day in advance. Rescheduled lessons must take place within one week of the missed lesson. No refunds will be given for lessons missed without prior notification or lessons cancelled on the day of the lesson.

At what age can children start guitar lessons?

I have taught kids as young as 5 but not always with much success. Kids need to have a good level of maturity and concentration before attempting to learn a musical instrument. I would consider 7 to be a more reasonable starting age but this is different with each individual.

Are you fully disclosed?

Yes, I am a member of Disclosure Scotland's Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme and permitted to work with children and vulnerable adults.

Do parents need to stay during their child's lesson?

I would recommend that kids under the age of ten have a parent present during the lesson. It will give the parent a better idea of what their child is learning and they will be able to help their child when practicing at home.

Is it better to start playing acoustic guitar before getting an electric?

From a learning perspective there is no benefit to starting with an acoustic guitar before playing electric. In many ways the electric guitar is easier to play.

Do I need to buy a lesson book?

Depending on what a student wants to learn, I might recommend a particular book for them to work from. Lesson books are not included in the cost of tuition. Students are responsible for finding their own copy of any books they need.
